Starting the school year ready and adjusting throughout the year

COVID impacted all of us in the last 15 months. I never could have imagined a school year like this one! I am Heather Davis Schmidt and I started as the Target Range School District Superintendent in July 2020. As a team, the Target Range School administrators, teachers, support staff, Board of Trustees, and TR COVID Task Force  jumped right in to make plans and get the school year underway. Throughout the school year we made many adjustments due to COVID and also began big picture planning for the long-term. We want to thank Target Range families, the broader TR community, our teachers, support staff, and administrators for the flexibility, understanding, patience, and tremendous support we’ve received this school year.

Strategic planning

In May 2021 the Board of Trustees approved a new five-year strategic plan to take us into the next phase at Target Range School. Over several months in spring 2021 the Board took feedback from families and community members in the Target Range School in addition to teacher and support staff input in finalizing the plan. You can read more about the entire process and the full plan details on the Target Range School District website.

Ultimately the Trustees identified a mission and several guiding principles to set the plan’s foundation, along with five strategic goal areas including: learning and teaching, knowledge building, learning environment, connections and relationships, and fiscal responsibility. The strategic plan framework includes several specific strategic goal statements within each of the five strategic goal areas.

Our next steps are to review the final plan with our guiding coalition, comprised of administrators, teacher leaders, and a support staff leader, to fully develop implementation action objectives for the 2021-2022 school year for each of the strategic goals. We’ve begun this work and will share our 2021-2022 implementation plan that includes a timeline for each action objective on the District’s website. Each month at our General Board Meeting, the Superintendent will report on and Trustees will monitor progress toward the action objectives. New action objectives will be developed and shared each succeeding school year.

Looking ahead to 2021-2022

With vaccinations and a significant slow down in the impact of COVID-19 on our community, we hope to get back to a sense of normalcy at Target Range School. We will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments, as needed.

We plan to send newsletters out to our TR community a few times each year to keep you updated on what we are doing. In the meantime, please reach out - I’d love to hear from you and meet you. You can reach me at the District Office, (406) 549-9239 option 1 or via email at We wish everyone a wonderful, safe, and family-filled summer!
